Peruvian farmer runs dairy farm on guinea pig power
Eco Factor: Farm uses guinea pig poop to produce combustible gas. While for many of us solar and wind energy are the two most easily accessible forms of renewable energy, a Peruvian farmer is using the waste of his adorable animals to produce enough energy to power his dairy farm. The farmer collects about 400 pounds of guinea pig poop each month, which is then left for anaerobic digestion. Once bacteria have feasted on the poop, a combustible gas is produced that can be used to generate electricity. The system doesnt need fancy, expensive equipment, but can generate renewable electricity in a green fashion. The monthly collection allows the farmer to run his dairy farm, while generates a little extra gas as well. Via: BoingBoing

Foster and Partners design eco-friendly residences in Mauritius
Eco Factor: Sustainable residences harvest renewable solar energy. Fosters and Partners have collaborated with dUnienville and Associates Architects to develop an environmentally friendly masterplan for a series of sustainable residences in Corniche Bay, Mauritius. The development blends harmoniously with the lush landscape and fingers of tropical vegetation have been inserted in the buildings as well. The residential development includes water collectors to harvest rainwater and reuse it as gray water within the development. Solar panels have also been incorporated in the building to generate renewable solar energy. The undulating roof allows for cross ventilation in order to minimize energy consumption. Via: Evolo
